In Japanese elementary schools, every child grows a morning glory in a plastic pot.
When the pot has done its job, the children wash it by hand,
and it is upcycled into the handle of a Kumano brush,
colored with “kachiiro”, the traditional Japanese indigo.
Then, with the finished brush,
the children write a letter to someone dear to them.
One story of circulation,
woven with care from beginning to end.

“Kachiiro” is the deepest indigo in Japan,
born from dyeing cloth in indigo again and again.
The word “kachi” comes from 搗ち, “to pound”:
the artisan’s handwork of beating the cloth,
driving the indigo in, and layering dye upon dye,
time after time after time.
It cannot be achieved in one pass.
It deepens only in proportion to the labor and time laid into it.
A practice that grows deeper with every layer
is the very shape of circulation:
not discarding a resource, but adding value to it, layer by layer.
藍 = JAPAN BLUE
Indigo = JAPAN BLUE
「JAPAN BLUE」
Visitors who came to Japan in the Meiji era
were so struck by the beauty of Japanese indigo
that they named it “JAPAN BLUE”.
We dress a product born from circulation
in the color that represents Japan to the world.
Kachi = The beauty of layering
Take a resource that was to be thrown away,
work it by hand, layer color upon it,
and clothe it in value once more.
“The more you layer, the deeper it becomes.”
This Japanese sense of beauty lives in each brush.

Children wash the pots by hand

Pots that have finished their job at school
are washed by the children themselves.
Not “throwing away” but “passing on”:
they take the very first step.

The collected pots go to a recycler,
where they are carefully cleaned and crushed,
ready for a new life as raw material.

The crushed pots are refined
into uniform flakes.
Instead of being incinerated,
they are reborn as a material
that can take shape once more.

Indigo is blended into the flakes,
which are molded into brush handles.
The recycled material takes on a deep indigo,
as if dyed layer upon layer.

Holding the finished brush,
the children write a letter to someone they love.
The pot they washed with their own hands
is now a brush carrying their words.
The moment the circle closes as a story of the heart.
